Homeplace Here We Come!

This Thursday is Reading day!! Woo! To celebrate CCVT will be going to The Homeplace which is a restaurant where they serve all-you-can-eat homestyle food -- fried chicken, roast beef, pork BBQ, biscuits, mashed potatoes, green beans, and more! All that brought to your table endlessly till you just can't even!

This costs about $15 which includes everything but the tip -- it even includes your drink and tax! And if you desire you can get cobbler and ice cream for dessert, too! For about $4.

So if you plan on eating dinner Thursday, you should also plan on being at the campus house at 4pm! We shall carpool to The Homeplace and even do a short Christmas devo while we wait to be seated!

Have a great last day of classes and we hope to see you Thursday!

Christmas Party this Friday!

Hey guys!
Just a reminder that this Friday is the Christmas party at CCVT!

It is finally time for the White Elephant Gift Exchange, aka Yankee Swap. Don't forget to bring a wrapped gift worth about $10 dollars. We'll draw numbers and take turns opening gifts. And remember, the catch is you can "steal" a gift someone else has already opened, and they can either "steal" another gift, or open something new. It gets very entertaining, especially with Sam helping to stir things up!

Also, we'll have lots of delicious Christmas desserts! If you would like to bring a Christmas dessert to share, that would be awesome. It doesn't have to be homemade, although that is always a real treat when it is!

It all starts at 7pm!

Hope to see ya there!

Whether you usually carpool to Belmont Christian Church with us, or you attend somewhere else on Sunday mornings, we hope you will join us for this special, one-time-only worship event at CCVT.

Looking forward to seeing you there!

Friday Night Jamboree!

Hey Guys!
This Friday we will be going to the Friday Night Jamboree in Floyd!

What's a Jamboree? Understandable question!
A jamboree is a shindig with people and music and in this case, dancing. Not just any dancing, but this place is all about bluegrass and flat footing.

What's Flat footing? Again, understandable question!
This one is hard to explain so you should probably just come and see.

Its only $5 to get in and watch/participate in the Jamboree. If you think you might want to buy food, ice cream, a Tshirt, or anything else you might find there, bring some extra dough.

Be at the campus house at 5pm to carpool!

See ya there!

UPDATE on Fall Costume Party Tonight @ 7

Hey guys! Just a few more details about our Fall Costume Party tonight at the campus house:

1) I don't think we did this hot dog thing justice in our last email. Allow me to clarify: We are going to have a hot dog bar where you can build whatever kind of hot dog you want. We'll have all the ingredients needed for...

New York City style -- sauerkraut & brown mustard
Chicago style -- onions, tomatoes, pickle spears, relish, yellow mustard, and a sprinkle of celery salt
Carolina style -- coleslaw & barbecue sauce
Cincinnati style -- chili, diced onions, yellow mustard, & mounds of shredded cheese

It's a veritable tour of America! A cultural experience! Come experience a hot dog in a way you never have before!

Then there's going to be s'mores for dessert!

2) Bring camping chairs if you have them. We'll enjoy sitting around the fire in those. We can always use our regular chairs if we don't have enough camping chairs, but the camping chairs are more comfortable for sitting around the fire.

3) We are doing a costume contest with prizes, but you don't have to wear a costume to get into the party.  So feel free to invite your friends at the last minute. Just have them come on over even without a costume if they can't think of anything to throw together real fast. They'll still have fun.

If you've forgotten, the contest categories are:
Funniest
Most Creative
Best Movie/History Character
& Best Overall

See you soon!

Hey guys!
This Friday at 7PM we are having a Costume Party!!

There shall be a bonfire for s'mores, as well as hot dogs with all the fixings!

We are also doing a costume contest with prizes for the:
Funniest
Most Creative

You don't have to wear a costume to get into the party, but, hey, you can't win a prize without one. (Good luck!)

It should be a good time so come on out Friday night to the campus house, rain or shine. The forecast is calling for clear skies, but even if it rains, we have plenty of stuff planned for indoors, so it shan't be a problem.

Have a great week!

In addition to enjoying our own creations of yum, we shall be watching Big Hero 6, which everyone knows is a pretty great movie. (if you haven't seen it then you basically have to come if only for that reason)

Women of the Word Bible Study

Hey Ladies!

You are beautiful!!! I know this --
I might have never met you in person yet --

but I know this! D
o you know this??? I hope you do! "You are fearfully and wonderfully made"(Psalm 139)  and you are beautiful because the Creator "knit you together" even before you were born and He is the Master Artist! No one and nothing can ever change this beauty bestowed on you -- He made you and because of this, you are beautiful!

This is Stacey from Christ's Church at VT Campus Ministry and I want to invite you to our next WOW! -- Women of the Word Bible Study. We meet each Sunday Night at 7pm at CCVT's Campus House during the Fall Semester.

Things you might want to know about this study:
1) We are a friendly group! And we really want you to be there! And we will miss you if you don't come! Remember: Sundays at 7!

2) You don't have to know a lot about the Bible to come, in fact, you don't have to own a Bible -- we can give you one! We are all learning together and that's what makes it so much fun as we support each other and spur each other on to grow up and become more like our Savior, God's only Son - Jesus. Jesus gave His very life for us to set us free from sin and death -- He showed us how to live, and love and even die because of His great love! And because of His sacrifice we can have a new start and a new life in Him today and forever!

3) We do a lot of sharing and encouraging in this group, and this is really good because God didn't mean for us to go it alone -- we need each other and God can teach us so much through each other as we share our lives, experiences and challenges.

4) Sharing is important -- but what we value most is -- God's Word because this is God's love letter to us! And who doesn't like a love letter?? God is the one that loves us most and so His love letter to us -- the Bible -- is what we major on in the WOW Bible study!

We really hope to see you this SUNDAY!

Praying for You

I just got done praying this prayer for all the students on CCVT's email list this year. It comes straight from the Bible -- Colossians 1:9-14. It says:

"We ask God to give you complete knowledge of his will and to give you spiritual wisdom and understanding. Then the way you live will always honor and please the Lord, and your lives will produce every kind of good fruit. All the while, you will grow as you learn to know God better and better.

We also pray that you will be strengthened with all his glorious power so you will have all the endurance and patience you need. May you be filled with joy, always thanking the Father. He has enabled you to share in the inheritance that belongs to his people, who live in the light. For he has rescued us from the kingdom of darkness and transferred us into the Kingdom of his dear Son, who purchased our freedom and forgave our sins." (New Living Translation)

This was the Apostle Paul's prayer for the Christians in Colossae. May all this come true in your life, too.

We'll be talking about this tonight at CCVT's "Oasis". I hope you can join us.

"Oasis" meets every Thursday night at 7:15 at CCVT's campus house which is right on the edge of campus, just one block from Lee Hall -- about a 2-3 minute walk for most of you if you live on campus. If you live off campus and ride the bus, we are only 100 yards from the Washington Street tennis courts bus stop. For a map & simple directions just look on the right side of your screen under the photo of the house. If you're still not clear on how to get here after looking at that (any directions can be a challenge when you are new to campus) give me a call at 540-552-8292 and I'll help you out. But it's really pretty easy to find.

Hope you can make it tonight.

God bless.

Our campus house is right on the edge of campus, just one block from Lee Hall -- about a 2-3 minute walk for most of you if you live on campus. If you live off campus and ride the bus, we are only 100 yards from the Washington Street tennis courts bus stop. Hike the Cascades!

Hey guys, listen up -- Alex has something to say:

Hey everyone!

This Saturday you have the opportunity to hike The Cascades!! The cascades is an amazing waterfall located just outside of Blacksburg. It's about a 4 mile easy hike round trip and you follow a beautiful stream all the way up.  It is one of the coolest things you will see while at Tech AND it’s on the Hokie Bucket list!

Afterwards, since no doubt ya shall be hungry, we will be going to a Mexican restaurant to feast on delicious food.

We will be meeting at the campus house at 10am so we can carpool.
The campus house is only one block from Lee and Miles halls. For a map and simple directions just look on the right side of your screen under the photo of our campus house. Or you can call us at 540-552-8292.

It should be a pretty great day!

Tell Me the Truth

Have you tried CCVT's Oasis Worship & Bible Study yet? If not, do it tonight! If you have, we hope to see you again tonight.

I can't think of a more important topic than what we'll be talking about tonight. From the beginning of Colossians we'll hear what God has to say about something a lot of people these days aren't even sure exists -- Truth! Did you know God had something to say on that topic? Do you know what he said? If not, you'd better be here to hear it. Seriously, I mean, shouldn't you? It's a pretty important thing to know what God thinks about something as crucial as truth.

As the name implies, Oasis is a place to come for spiritual refreshing. Oasis includes worship, Bible study, group discussion, sharing with friends, and prayer.

Oasis meets at our campus house, only one block from Lee and Miles halls. For a map and simple directions just look on the right side of your screen
under the photo of our campus house. If you're still not clear on how to get here after looking at that (any directions can be a challenge when you are so new to campus) give me a call at 540-552-8292 and I'll help you out. But it's really pretty easy to find.

Feel free to bring a friend.

See you tonight!

Getting Football Tickets and Sitting with Friends

And now for an important message from Michael:
--------------------------

Well howdy there partner,
Are you playing the lottery to get tickets to football games this year?  Do you wanna have awesome friends to sit with?  Well the answer to all your problems is in this here little ole post.

I've created a group for us online that up to 30 people can be a part of.  All you have to do is sign up for the lottery and use the 'Join A Group' option near the top of the page.  You can sign up for the lottery using your PID and password at the following link: http://www.hokietickets.com/student/lottery/pick.php .  Even if you've already signed up for the lottery, you can still go back to it and join the group before the lottery closes.  Warning: The deadline for the lottery and to be in our group for the Ohio State game is tonight at 11:59:59.  If you miss this deadline you can still join our group for later games.

Once you are part of the group, under the seating column you need to select which games you plan to attend with us.  After that, whoever wins the lottery out of our group will get to sit together!

Feel free to contact me in any way, shape, or form if you're having a hard time figuring it out. (540) 230-9654 rmstarr@vt.edu

Can't wait to have many an adventure with the lucky 30......mwhahahaha

Yours Truly with a BIG YEE-HAW,
Michael Starr

That is all. You are dismissed.

Men's Bible Study, 7:15pm Mondays

Hey guys,
Our men's Bible study continues tomorrow (Monday) night. We were glad to welcome some new guys to the group last week, and hope to welcome some more of you this week. Please come join us.

We like to call this small group Bible study "Men of God" because that describes what we're trying to help one another be.

Our "Men of God" Bible study has two main thrusts:
One is to study God's word and learn from it, of course.
The second is to make some really good friends who will support us and help us to live a life that pleases God.

Sometimes we have friends but faith really isn't at the center of our friendship, so they really don't do anything to help us stay strong in the faith. Maybe they even do the opposite.

Other times we study the Bible and learn more stuff about it, but we really aren't putting much of it into practice because we don't have anybody to help us know how, or to give us moral support.

"Men of God" is designed to bring these two crucial pieces together to give us the support we need to live out the truths we learn from God's word!

If you're new, the guys would love to welcome you to the group. Don't be shy -- come on over.

We meet 7:15pm Mondays at our campus house right on the edge of campus, just one block from Lee, O'Shag, or Miles Hall. For a map and simple directions just look on the right side of your screen under the photo of the house. If you're still not clear on how to get here after looking at that (any directions can be a challenge when you are brand new to campus) give me a call at 540-552-8292 and I'll help you out. But it's really pretty easy to find.

Let's get the year started off right.

Feel free to bring a friend.

Remember, 7:15pm Mondays.

I'll see you there.

We are carpooling to church again tomorrow morning, so if you need a ride, you are more than welcome to join us!

We'll meet at our campus house at 10:15am and carpool to Belmont Christian Church.

Afterward you are welcome to go out to eat with us. If anyone needs to head straight back to campus after church for a meeting or whatever, we can do that, too.

Our campus house is right on the edge of campus, just one block from Lee Hall -- about a 2-3 minute walk for most of you if you live on campus. For a map & simple directions just look on the right side of your screen under the photo of the house. If you're still not clear on how to get here after looking at that (any directions can be a challenge when you are brand new to campus) give me a call at 540-552-8292 and I'll help you out. S'mores and more!

Don't forget: tonight at 8:30 is Campfire Night at CCVT!

We'll roast marshmallows around the fire pit, make some s'mores, and enjoy sitting around the fire telling stories and maybe even sing some campfire songs and stuff!

Bring your camp and lawn chairs if you have any. (Not likely for those in the dorms, I know, but some of you off campus might have some.)

Invite your friends!

For a map and simple directions just look on the right side of your screen under the photo of our campus house. If you're still not clear on how to get here after looking at that (any directions can be a challenge when you are brand new to campus) give me a call at 540-552-8292 and I'll help you out. Free Spaghetti Dinner & Oasis

Tomorrow night (Thursday) and every Thursday night is our main weekly meeting which we like to call "Oasis". As the name implies, it's a place to come for spiritual refreshing. Oasis includes worship, Bible study, group discussion, sharing with friends, and prayer.

This week we have an extra special treat to kickoff the new school year. We are going to have a free homemade spaghetti dinner before Oasis, complete with meat sauce, garlic bread, salad and dessert. Our own Michael and Alex Starr are the "starr" chefs, with some help from their friends. Dinner starts at 6pm.

The dinner and Oasis will both be at our campus house, only one block from Lee and Miles halls. For a map and simple directions just go to CHRISTatVT.org and look on the right side of your screen
under the photo of our campus house. If you're still not clear on how to get here after looking at that (any directions can be a challenge when you are brand new to campus) give me a call at 540-505-4264 and I'll help you out. But it's really pretty easy to find.

Welcome to VT!

Welcome to Tech, new Hokies!

Maybe you've clicked through to our blog from VT's events calendar, were referred to our site by a friend, or just found us through a Google search. Regardless of how you ended up here, thanks so much for your interest in CCVT.

CCVT believes that God is real, the Bible is true, and Jesus in alive! We are a Bible believing group of students saved by grace and striving to love God and love people. We dig deep into God's Word to apply it to our lives, and we also spend a good amount of time just hanging out, laughing and having fun.

CCVT is more than just another student organization, or place to go to church --CCVT is a place where students build lifelong friendships and get the support we all need to thrive. We take the time to really care about each other and build one another up in our walk with God.

Below is a list of the events we have planned for the beginning of the fall semester. Please make a note of these on your calendar and make plans to join us. We are really looking forward to meeting you and getting to know you.

Also, don't forget to join us Thursday nights at 7:15pm at our campus house (right by the dorms, just
one block over from Washington St. by the tennis courts) for our main weekly meeting called "Oasis".

We also have small group Bible studies at various times during the week. And you are welcome to catch a ride to church with us on Sunday mornings.

Afterward you are welcome to go out to eat with us. If anyone needs to head straight back to campus after church for a meeting or whatever, we can do that, too.

M Aug. 24, 7:15pm -- Men of God Bible study -- a great group of guys getting together to study God's word and pray for each other every Monday. They're looking forward to meeting you!

R Aug. 27, 6pm -- Spaghetti Dinner before Oasis -- complete with garlic bread and salad. Yeah, we like food at CCVT, but more than that, we love people. And sitting down to enjoy some good spaghetti together is a great way to get to know each other and make some new friends in the process. Afterward you can join us for our main weekly gathering which we like to call "Oasis."

R Aug. 27, 7:15pm -- Oasis -- "Oasis" is CCVT's main weekly gathering dedicated to worship, Bible Study, group discussion, sharing with friends, & prayer. Invite your friends and come join us!

F Aug. 28, 8pm -- Campfire -- Let's roast marshmallows around the fire pit and make some s'mores!

Sun. Aug. 30, 10:15am -- Carpool to Church -- Catch a ride to church with us again. We may even have some of Blacksburg's famous Carol Lee donuts before we head to church. We've been known to do that from time to time on Sunday mornings. We'll probably go out for lunch together again, but we can get you straight back to campus if you need to be.

Sun. Aug. 30, 7pm -- Women of the Word Bible study -- a very welcoming group of girls that supports one another in applying God's word to their lives.

Like I said, all these events will be, or at least begin, at our campus house over by the dorms, one block over from Washington St. by the tennis courts. For most of you, that's closer than your classes! For a map & simple directions, just look on the right side of your screen.

Let us know if you have any questions. We'd be glad to do our best to answer them.

15th Semi-Annual Reading Day Dinner at The Homeplace

And now for an important message from Joe:

Hello Y’all,

This Thursday is Reading Day – the break between regularly scheduled classes and exams.  Classes are coming to a close, and exams are set to begin, so you (Yes, YOU!) should take some time to recharge for them.  Join us this Thursday for the 15th Semi-Annual Reading Day Dinner at The Homeplace!

If you’ve never been to The Homeplace or heard about its wonders, let me fill you in right now with some reasons why you should check it out:
(1) The Homeplace is a delicious all-you-can-eat restaurant in Catawba (out near Dragon’s Tooth and McAfee Knob along the AT, if you’re familiar with either of them).
(2) The food is delicious country-style food – fried chicken, roast beef, mashed potatoes, green beans, pinto beans, biscuits, apple butter, and a side of the day (which is usually corn or apples or something similar).
(3) This all-you-can-eat food is served directly to the table – you don’t have to get up until it’s time to go (well, unless the fire alarm goes off or something…)!
(4) After you’re done eating, they bring you fruit cobbler (perhaps apple or blackberry, etc.) and ice cream.  They’ll even bring you coffee if you want it.
(5) Thursday is BBQ day, so they also should be bringing out plenty of pulled pork and cole slaw!

We’re planning to meet up at the campus house at 4:30pm to carpool there.  It costs around $15 + a tip (so about $18) and is extremely worth it (especially if you come hungry).

Classes should be over (except exams), and you’re going to eat dinner anyways, so why not join us?

God Bless,
Joseph W. Starr

Thanks, Joe, for rounding us up for this long-lived CCVT tradition.

For those who may be wondering, we will probably make it back to campus sometime between 8 and 9pm.

Also, bear in mind, that $18 Joe was mentioning includes your drink, dessert, and even tax! So $18 is the true, total end price. So, not really much more than you would end up paying at a lot of other restaurants when all is said and done, and most of those aren't all you care to eat, and the food is not as good either. Plus the whole experience of eating family style is one of the funnest things about The Homeplace. You don't get that at the other restaurants.

Hope you can join us. It's always fun. And bring some friends with you!

Remember: 4:30pm Thursday (Reading Day) at the campus house.

Thanks.
Steve

Let's Go Out for Mexican

This Friday we are getting together to go out to eat for Mexican.

Meet us at the campus house at 6pm.

We're going to El Mariachi. It's in Blacksburg but way out South Main Street toward Christiansburg. For what it's worth, Joe and I agree it's the best Mexican restaurant in the New River Valley.

But even if you prefer another Mexican restaurant, or some other style of food altogether, we hope you'll come join us anyway, just to hang out with us.

Remember:
6pm Friday at the campus house.

Hope to see you then.

vtONE campus-wide worship event

Do you remember way back at the end of February I sent you an email encouraging you to go to vtONE, the campus-wide worship event? That feels like so long ago my memory about that is pretty hazy. But I do remember that it ended up getting canceled because the night of the worship event we had one of those big snow storms.

So guess what -- they rescheduled vtONE and it is going to be this coming Monday, April 20, at 7pm in Squires Commonwealth Ballroom!

Of course, our Men of God Bible study meets on Monday nights, so we talked about it last week and we decided to participate as a group in vtONE that week. You are invited to join us! (Not just the guys -- girls are invited, too!)

Here's the plan:
Meet at the campus house at 5:45pm.
Walk over to Moe's and eat.
Then walk over to Squires before 7pm to participate in vtONE.

We hope you will join us. This will be a good time of fellowship at Moe's before vtONE, and a good time of worship with brothers and sisters in Christ from many other campus ministries around campus at vtONE itself. It's another opportunity to express unity in Christ, not unlike what we did Friday night with the Ambassadors for Christ campus ministry. (We probably would have scheduled the two events further apart, but we didn't know about vtONE's new date until after we had already scheduled the joint worship event with the Ambassadors. But you can't get too much worship or unity with other Christians, so what's to complain about, right?)

The vtONE event is free. Regrettably, Moe's food is not.

Hope to see you at the campus house 5:45pm Monday night!

Joint Worship Extravaganza!

And now for an important message from Michael Starr:

Hello everyone,
Hope your week is moving along fantabulisticly!!! I'd like to take this opportunity to fashion a 100% student created announcement regarding tomorrow's upcoming event.

And that event is......(drum roll).......A DELUXE JOINT WORSHIP EVENT EXTRAVAGANZA!!!!!!!

That's right, you read that correctly.  CCVT and the Ambassadors for Christ are teaming up to produce twice the worship in half the time that we'd be able to accomplish otherwise as individual ministries.  So grab your singin' shorts and plan on joining us at the campus house at 7 pm esttomorrowApril 17th, 2015 AD

Things that will happen:
1. Short Devo by yours truly
2. Worship Singing (It'll be a Capella, but don't worry, we have excellent leaders in the Ambassadors to drown out those of us who are a Capella-ly challenged.)
3. Prayer Time
4. Optional Celebratory Pilgrimage to Frosty Parrot

Still not convinced you should come?  I'm gonna give you 3 good reasons why ya oughta join us!
1. Worshiping God is a great way to strengthen the bond between each other and God
2. It's an excellent chance to fellowship with other Christians outside of our campus ministry, which is both encouraging and we'll have some new friends around campus!

So be sure to join us! I guarantee it'll be worth your time.  And, since time is money, you can hold me personally and financially responsible if you feel that it was not worth your time!!  Oh, what's that?  You want to know what the 3rd reason to join us is??? Well, HA! I shall reveal the 3rd reason tomorrow at the event.  And now the curiosity will eat away at you, slowly, until you just gotta come find out.

Your friend in time,
Michael

That is all. You are now dismissed to return to your previous activities. Thank you.

Spring Cleaning Day

Hey CCVTers, hope you are having a good week.

Don't forget, this Saturday, April 11, starting at 10am we will be having a Spring Cleaning Day at CCVT's campus house. There is some yard work that needs to be done, as well as some indoor cleaning to do, so no matter which kind you prefer, we've got a project for you.

The weather forecast is shaping up to be perfect! God is really blessing us with some awesome weather. It's going to be sunny and in the 50's while we are working, with a gentle breeze, and low humidity. Perfect for working outside, or inside with the windows open!

Can we count on you to help? It's a great service opportunity in the spirit of "ut prosim". Plus you will have the satisfaction of a job well done which you'll get to see every time you come to the campus house, and you'll be helping the Lord's work, which is the most important work you can possibly help, and "great will be your reward in heaven", right?

We'll meet at the campus house at 10am to start divvying out the assignments.

When we finish our projects we'll enjoy some pizza together -- a well deserved reward for your hard work. I'm thinking we'll be done by 2pm if not sooner.

Hey, even cleaning can be fun when you are doing it with friends, and as they say, "Many hands make light work", so I hope you will come join us Saturday for some good fellowship and service time with your CCVT friends

See you Saturday morning.

The Song

Have you seen the movie, "The Song", yet? I know several students who have and they all said it was really, really good, so now I'm really looking forward to seeing it.

People seem to have strong emotional reactions to the story in this movie. Some people get really mad at the main character. Michael said in an understated way, "It made me feel," by which he meant, in a very strong way such that the first thing he wanted to do when the movie was over was go and give Alex a hug and tell her how much he loves her. Catherine said she liked the movie so much she would like to see it again. So these are the kind of reviews The Song is getting from students like you. I hope you will come and see what all the fuss is about and watch the movie with us.

We'll be watching it together at the campus house this Friday at 7pm on our big screen.

Feel free to invite your friends to come join us, too!

Let's enjoy some delicious snacks while we watch the movie. If you have a favorite "movie snack" you love to eat while watching a movie, feel free to bring some to share. We don't need everybody to bring something. We already have a few snacks, so don't feel obligated to bring anything. Just an option if you want to share the joy of your favorite movie snack with others.

See you Friday at 7pm!
